From the moment you insert the disc into your GameCube and power it on, you get the feeling that you're right in the middle of a great game. The intro video is really fun and gives you the assurance that it's going to be good. On the Nintendo 64, Mario Tennis was released. And now, its sequel is here. Can this game surpass its predecessor?

Addictive gameplay with unique tennis courts full of obstacles
Mario Power Tennis is a very addictive game! I was already able to warm up with Mario Tennis 64 and Mario Power Tennis on the Gameboy Advance.
Mario Power Tennis features several tennis courts with or without 'obstacles'. For example, you can play tennis on a court full of ghosts (Boo, of course, not included) that try to distract you and sometimes even want to place a banana peel on the court. There is also a court where Piranha Plants make the court dirty and of course, you don't easily walk through them. Luckily, you can remove those obstacles if you stand in the right place or if you hit the ball correctly.
When playing with more than one person, you won't get bored easily. Especially not with those Special Games. For example, you have to create a whole 'painting' on a wall with paint tennis balls. It may take some getting used to at first, but then it becomes natural.
The game doesn't get boring quickly (in my opinion). It's a superb Mario Sports Game (is that even a category?)!

When Mario Tennis was truly great
Mario Tennis is nowadays a bit of a rushed series with games that lack a lot of content. Mario Power Tennis is the perfect example of how a Mario Tennis game should be!

Mario Power Tennis features solid tennis gameplay. By using simple button combinations, you can use different types of shots to score a point, just like in real tennis. But what makes it "Mario Tennis"? Well, you can get power shots. These are really cool, because each character has their own unique offensive and defensive power shot with its own animation! This allows you to execute extremely powerful shots or hit balls that you normally wouldn't be able to reach. You can't use it continuously, which adds even more depth and strategic thinking to the game.

But that's not all! The game has so much more to offer. In addition to the fantastic cutscenes, you play tournaments to win cups. But you can also play special matches with power-ups or rings, against both the computer or other players!

Furthermore, there are the a-ma-zing mini-games! Hit paintballs against a wall to color in a painting or take on a giant Blooper with changing floor panels! This brings so much replay value with it! Extra characters, mini-games, and tennis courts can be unlocked, rewarding you even more!

The tennis courts are also extremely varied. From a big stadium to a ghostly graveyard from Luigi's Mansion to the original Mario Bros. There's so much to see! Each court also has its own features that influence the gameplay. These can also be disabled in individual matches.

All in all, this is an incredibly enjoyable Mario Tennis game, much better than the later games in the series. So if you want to experience how great Mario Tennis used to be, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try!

Super Cool Successor with Versatile Modes and Addictive Gameplay
My opinion is: When I see the title Mario Tennis, it can mean two things: either a milked version, or a super cool successor! In this case, we are clearly talking about the latter.
The intro video already starts off really cool with a great story and you haven't even started the game yet! You already have a choice of about 15 characters at the beginning, which is quite a lot, and then you can 'unlock' a few more during the game. The tennis simulation is very well put together and the special powers make it even cooler than a regular tennis game. The Gimmick Mode adds some extra mini-games to make the game even more extensive. Then you also have the Ring Mode, where you have to hit the ball through rings, and the Item Mode, where, as expected, you play with items. So plenty to do!
The graphics are as you would expect from Nintendo, great, and the gameplay is awesome. If you like Mario games, you really should get this one. If not, I would still definitely recommend trying it out because the game is insanely addictive and incredibly cool to play with a few friends!

Diverse gameplay with unique tactics and mini-games
Mario Power Tennis is incredibly fun and diverse. It provided a lot of enjoyment with my friends, especially because depending on your opponent, you have to adjust your tactics. For example, the tall Waluigi likes to come to the net, so you should focus on hitting a lot of lobs! This variation makes the game exciting and challenging.

There are many different types of shots in the game, and if you really want to excel, you should actually take a look at the manual. The unique Power Shots of each character add an extra layer of strategy. For instance, Mario has a powerful fire shot, while Luigi has an ice shot that can freeze the opponent. This makes each match different and allows you to try out new tactics all the time.

The mini-games are a fun change of pace and a source of nostalgia for fans of the Mario series. In Terror Tennis, for example, you have to hit the ghosts from Luigi's Mansion back into their portraits, and in Artist on the Court, you'll hear the music from the castle of Super Mario 64. These mini-games provide a nice break between regular matches and evoke a sense of nostalgia.

The first time I played it, I laughed at Yoshi's special attack, still do actually...
I enjoy everything that involves characters from Mario Party, well, almost everything.

Tennis games aren't really my thing, but I make an exception for this one. I also find the opening scene with the Wicked Bros. (Wario and Waluigi) quite amusing.
It's a bit odd that when you perform a special move, the tennis ball freezes, but it's still funny. I perform the best with Diddy Kong.

Cheerful Environments and Nintendo Tunes in Mario Power Tennis
After Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, I was convinced enough of the Mario sports series to dare give this game a chance. I must say again that I've never played Mario Tennis 64, so I can't judge the improvements in this game.
What stands out in this game, just like the golf game for the GameCube and many other Mario games, are the cheerful environments (in this case, tennis courts) and the Nintendo tunes. You have a wide choice of characters, as many of Mario's friends are included. The character you choose also influences your gameplay. For example, Yoshi is very fast and Waluigi is good at defense. For those who can't decide, there are also all-rounders, like Mario.
By combining the A and B buttons, you can perform different types of shots. It takes a bit of practice at the beginning (and it's a shame there isn't some kind of 'practice mode' available), but it adds a bit more strategy to the game.

The game naturally features the classic tennis gameplay. You can play against the computer in various modes, and multiplayer gaming is also an option. This can even be done in doubles (which is required for 3/4 players, a small downside).
But the most fun part is undoubtedly the courts with a bunch of real Nintendo quirks. Sometimes very frustrating, but that challenge makes it very enjoyable (especially for advanced players).
Lastly, there are a few mini-games as well. These, like in most Mario games, are fun for variety but don't quite match the main game.
Overall, I also recommend this game. I personally find it slightly less appealing than Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, but it's still an incredibly fun game and worth a try!

Mario Power Tennis is an incredibly fun tennis game. I played the game on the Gamecube, watched the intro, and thought: this must be a fantastic game. And it was! Mario Power Tennis is truly a cool game! My friend brought this game along one time when we were planning to have some fun playing on the cube together. So, I decided to give it a try. What a fun game! The graphics are already very good, and you can play for a long time because you keep discovering more ways to score a point! Additionally, the mini-games are also very enjoyable! But the most fun is, of course, the tennis itself! I prefer playing as Mario, because he can use his mallet! The absolute best part of this game for me is that you can play tennis together! My opinion: Mario Power Tennis is a cool tennis game! It's most enjoyable with four players and definitely worth its price! My rating: 9

Awesome Powershots and Challenging Game Modes in Mario Power Tennis
My opinion of Mario Power Tennis is that it's an AWESOME GAME. Those powershots are awesome, the controls are good, and there are fun game modes. By linking your GBA to the GameCube, you can get even better characters. You can also unlock characters without using your GBA. I'm not going to say which ones because that wouldn't be fun for gamers who haven't finished the game yet. There's also a cheat: hold Z at the start menu and keep holding it while pressing start. This will unlock a new game mode.

Mario Power Tennis: Surprisingly Entertaining for Mario Fans
Really a super cool game! I really love sports. But tennis isn't really something that appeals to me. Still, I bought the game because I'm a total Mario fanatic. And my money was definitely well spent on this game. It's tennis, but in Mario's style. Lots of weird things happening. You'll be amazed during a match. Something different from those boring tennis matches on TV!

Packed with Fun Mini-Games and Humor
Absolutely fantastic!!!!!! Packed with fun mini-games spiced up with some humor! Believe me, if you're looking for quality, Mario Power Tennis is the way to go. Play a regular match or play on a court that moves or even attacks you for real! And if you get tired of that, try completing all the mini-games. The coolest player (yes, it's a girl, but you wouldn't notice!) in my opinion is Petey Piranha. She may have some bad table manners (just watch her power shot) but she is incredibly strong. Not even Bowser can match her! The only downside to this game might be the multiplayer mode. The player closest to the camera has an easier control, making them almost always win. But other than that, this game is really top-notch! Definitely worth buying!

Multiplayer Fun with Original Attack and Defense Techniques
Let's start at the beginning: the intro video. This is quite nicely done, with Wario and Waluigi taking the lead. They vandalize Mario and Luigi on the tournament roster and immediately attract all sorts of robot agents. This video is quite entertaining and the first time you should really watch it, but of course, you're waiting for the game, and if you can't wait, you can skip it.
Once you reach the main menu, the first thing you'll want to do is play some tennis. And in Mario Power Tennis, the tennis gameplay is very well developed. You can choose from fifteen characters, and this selection is expanded later on, so plenty of choices! You pick a character for yourself and one for the opponent, and if a friend wants to join, they just have to press A. Then you choose between Singles or Doubles. Make your choice and select a court. Then choose a mode. The Play Mode is self-explanatory, just regular tennis. The Gimmick mode is a bit different, with elements like ghosts from Luigi's Mansion causing trouble. In Ring Mode, you have to hit the ball through rings, and in Item Mode, you play with items. But enough talking, let's get to the tennis!
Each character has their own tennis racket, their own attack, and their own defense. The controls are very well done. You use A and B to play tennis, and when your racket glows, you can press X or Y to attack or defend. When do you attack and when do you defend? You attack when you are right in front of the ball, and something special happens. Luigi gets a big hammer, Bowser spits fire, Boo gets help from various Mini-Boos. This is very amusing and well executed, just like the defense moves: If you see that you are going to miss the ball, you can also do something special when your racket glows. Waluigi swims to the ball, Peach kisses the ball towards her, and Wario uses his extendable arm. These attack and defense techniques are all very original and a lot of fun.
In Singleplayer, this game can get boring quickly, but in multiplayer, it's a blast! This game deserves, no, must be included alongside Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in the lineup!

If you have your powershot ready, and so does your opponent, and your opponent is tough (not a novice or someone from the Mushroom Cup), it doesn't make much sense to use your offensive powershot. (They'll just block it anyway.) What you can do instead is wait for your opponent to use their attack, and then precisely as the ball is over the net, use your defense. (No, don't press the button quickly in succession; time it right!) This often results in hitting the ball past/over them. And they won't be expecting that; right after an offensive powershot, there's a brief pause before they can move/hit again. If your opponent is simple (Novice), then of course you can just go ahead and use your offensive powershot.

Notes:
- You need a defense that brings you to the ball (like Mario's spin or Yoshi's egg) and not one that brings the ball to you (Luigi's vacuum cleaner). If you do have such a defense, you need to be at the net to execute it.
- This doesn't work with some powershots/players. Like Paratroopa's lob.
- The opponent shouldn't be standing at the back.
