I have a technique that makes it easier!
After releasing a drift, let go of A and then press it again to start drifting; the drift you make then is not as sharp (you won't veer off too much). Handy for straight sections of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
2: L-R technique (In Wario Colosseum and Rainbow Road, there's a section where you need to drift very sharply.
When drifting on that section, keep pressing L repeatedly (for left drifts). Do the same with R for right drifts.

For the second shortcut, stick to the center at the start until you notice a sandy ramp to your right. Only take this route if you have a Mushroom, or else you'll slow down.
As for the third shortcut, it's right on the main bridge itself. This time, don't go over the bridge; instead, use the railings on the bridge. It's tricky to stay on track, but you'll gain a lot of speed, and if executed well, it can make a significant difference.

Sometimes you get hit by shields and other items.
What can you do about it?
In every Mario Kart: Double Dash!! track, there are of course ? blocks.
Sometimes double. When you drive through those doubles, you get 2 items.
You usually get banana peels.
You should keep the L button pressed when someone shoots an item at you. You won't get hit then, unless you're in a sharp turn. In that case, you'll get hit from the side.
Your banana peel (or other item like red shell, green shell, banana peel) will indeed get hit by your enemy's item.
You can sometimes dodge red shells in a different way as well, but not always.
Namely like this:
If someone shoots a red shell at you while you're in a turn, take the turn very sharply. The red shell will sometimes (not always) fly off the turn.

When I first got my hands on the game Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, I used to drop my weapons everywhere as soon as I got them. But that quickly changed.
Now, when I get a Fake Item Box, I place it among real Item Boxes. Others will think it's real and... or they won't see it and...
But when I get a Green Shell or a Banana, I keep it with me until someone is right next to me or when a Red Shell is approaching. I throw my Green Shell/Banana backwards and it will break the Red Shell! This doesn't work with a Fake Item Box!!! Or I drift and make sure I move just slightly left/right as the Red Shell approaches from the front.
The Red Shell will then pass by me. This can also be done with Blue Shells! Do this when the Blue Shell is descending!!

Yoshi and Birdo have a handy weapon: the egg!
It's similar to a red shell, but when it hits someone, three random items (shells, bananas, bombs, mushrooms, and stars) come out.
Even if you're in first place, still throw it forward! It will crack on its own eventually, it doesn't need to hit anyone. If you're lucky, a star or mushroom might come out, and you really need to drive over those!
That's why I think the egg is the best special item in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.

Here are some hints for playing Battle Cups in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!:
Block Fort
The best battles take place in Block Fort. If you have a Fake Block, hold onto it. Then, grab another Item Box and place a Fake Block EXACTLY where the REAL Block was before it respawns. When another player hits it, they will receive an item but lose it immediately and take damage from the Fake Block. Ta-Da-Ta-Daa! NOTE: If a 2nd player happens to be on your team, make sure to warn them about the Fake Block so they don't fall for it themselves.
Hill full of fake blocks!
Try filling uphill slopes (or bridges) with Fake Blocks. If another player (hopefully from the opposing team) tries to cross, they won't be able to unless they want to sacrifice one of their balloons.
Stealing balloons!
If you crash hard (I mean REALLY hard) into another player (preferably from the other team), you can steal their balloon.
Sometimes this also eliminates them from the game.
If you have 3 shields (preferably green), let them spin around you. Collide with another player (you guessed it... OPPOSING TEAM!) and you can snatch one of their balloons.
This also works with just one shield. Hold down the button to fire weapons to keep the shield behind you. If you crash into a player like mentioned above (Say it with me: PLAYER FROM THE OPPOSING TEAM!!!!), you can steal one of their balloons.
NOTE: However, you can also fall victim to your own Fake Blocks or Bananas (or any other weapons, like laid-down shields), so be careful!
