How can I recruit more mercenaries in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance?

Have any of your team members (men or women) died yet? That's rough! Luckily, there are three ways to recruit Mercenaries.
Pay close attention to your opponents during battles! If they're dressed differently from the others, that "enemy" might actually want to help you. You usually have to talk to that person, usually with "Ike," using the "talk" function in your Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance menu.
Another possibility is during battles when people (Beorc or Laguz) are talking somewhere. Listen carefully to those conversations. You need to talk to the RIGHT person (the one who really stands out in the conversation). It's also possible that the enemy will start talking to you on their own. But most conversations are with bosses, and you have to defeat them!
You can also talk to "Other allies." They might also want to join your team.

During the game Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, you can obtain "bonus xp." You do this by completing maps as quickly as possible.
You can use this bonus XP to give a character a boost before a map. The glitch in this game is that you can reset the game if the stats the character receives when leveling up are not good. A bit cheaty, but this way you can create "god" characters if you want to...
